Let’s talk about the last straw that crushed the camel.
I had very few vacation days, not to mention, it was my first year of employment, so my holiday was over after a few good nights. The annual leave was only five days plus the weekend, for a total of seven days. I planned to go to a quiet place alone with A, just to watch the sea and bask in the sun.
One day, A took me to dinner with some friends, all of whom had been best friends in college. That day, D was also there. He used to be very good at organizing activities in the student union. He said B just happened to be back, so this year everyone should get together for their annual leave, else there would be no chance in the future. Back in college, they had gone out to play together once or twice, and their relationship used to be very good. I never went with them because B was there and A didn’t call me.
Except for me, everyone was thrilled to go. I was embarrassed. I didn’t really want to go, but singing a different tune alone was not easy. After all, A’s friends, including B, treated me very well. I hadn’t decided whether to go or not. I said to talk about it later. D knew A and I were a pair, but he had met A relatively late, so he didn’t know about the complicated relationship between A, B, and me. D kept persuading me. He could really talk. He basically toasted me and said if I didn’t go, it was because I didn’t like them or something. I said I couldn’t match my free time to theirs. He said it was ok; they would adjust. Later, to make him shut up, I just nodded.
A could see that I didn’t want to go. When I returned home, he asked me if he could go this time. Because his work was special, he had busy and off-season periods. During the off-seasons, he could ask for another leave to accompany me. I think he would have had to wait for another two months for the off-season. A obviously wanted to go, and D also said so; didn’t it look a bit arrogant if I didn’t go? I got my act together and decided to go.
This time, I was determined. We broke up after this trip.
The six of us went to an island. I stayed with A, while B and C stayed together, and D stayed with his girlfriend. I had a great time during the first two days, swimming and beach surfing during the day, and eating seafood, drinking beer, and playing games during the night. There was no major contact between A and B. They looked like ordinary friends. Even the Grimm’s Fairy Tales weren’t so perfectly told.
On the third day, A wanted to go diving, but D stayed with his girlfriend. A, B, C, and I went diving (how do I feel I went diving with a bunch of English letters (panic.jpg)). Forget it; let’s change the names. We usually called C Brother Egg. He was funny and good at taking care of people. Let’s call B Fu Yan, a very gentle and elegant person. A was still A. I decided not to name him.
I can usually snorkel for at least two hours and dive for half an hour. But maybe because I ate too much seafood the night before, I had diarrhea, and I felt a little weak. After half an hour of snorkeling, I was exhausted. A and Brother Egg went deep diving, so I said I would go back to the shore. Fu Yan said he would go back with me, so the people on the island came to pick us up. Fu Yan and I were each on one of those speedboats. The person who was driving Fu Yan’s speedboat was either new or drunk. He drove very fast and wanted to make a sharp 180-degree turn. As a result, he suddenly hit my speedboat. The fronts of the two boats collided without hitting anyone, but my whole body was knocked out by that force, and so was Fu Yan’s. The two speedboats overturned, and the four of us fell into the water.
We were all wearing life jackets, so we couldn’t sink. As long as the boat didn’t hit us, we were ok. But it all happened suddenly, and I was unsure of what was up or down, so I panicked a little. I could swim, but something was wrong with my right leg, so I had no strength. I swayed my hands, kicked with my left leg, and drank a lot of water.
A and Brother Egg were about 50 meters away from us. I knew they were coming on a speedboat. While I was struggling and drinking water, I heard A’s voice. He was calling Fu Yan, shouting his name with a hoarse voice three times. It turned out his voice was like that when he was really nervous.
When the boat came near us, A jumped into the water and swam toward Fu Yan. With each additional swimming stroke, I felt he was making an extra knife stab in my heart. I clasped my hands tightly in the water, shivering uncontrollably, while tears welled up in my eyes. Suddenly, I couldn’t move. I froze in the water and let the life jacket drag me wherever it went. I didn’t know whether I had tears or seawater on my face.
I had never seen A panic like that for anyone.
In everyday life, we get along quite well. Only at the time of crisis we can see real love or hate. Otherwise, how can anyone say that we see the truth during a life-or-death situation? I think this is when we realize our true feelings.
I just had one thought at the time. I couldn’t live with A anymore.

At the original publication location (Allcp.net), chapter 4 ended here. Later, the author republished the novel on Gongzicp and merged this chapter with the next. It’s a bit too long to translate it all in one go, so I split it into two, according to the original format.
